Lakeland’s historic preservation program is dedicated to protecting the unique architectural, cultural, and historical character of our community. Long term outcomes of this program have strengthened the local economy by attracting and stimulating private investment, creating new jobs, stabilizing and improving property values, and increasing tourism. The Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation are used as the basis and reference for the city’s various Design Guidelines. These Standards and Guidelines are used by the Historic Preservation Board to evaluate all exterior alterations, demolitions, and new construction within the city’s seven historic districts.
