| The Housing Section administers the City of Lakeland’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME), and State Housing Initiatives Partnership Program (SHIP). CDBG and HOME are federal grants and SHIP is a state grant. The division also administers the City’s Community Service Grants. In the year 2005, the City also received state HOME Again and Hurricane Housing Recovery funds to assist with replacement and repair of housing damaged during the 2004 hurricanes.
Historically, funding has been utilized to provide the City’s low to moderate income residents with housing rehabilitation, home purchase assistance, public facilities, code enforcement, sidewalk and street paving, and countless public service grants. Assistance is available only within the corporate limits of the City of Lakeland. (Residents located in Polk County, but outside the Lakeland city limits, should contact the Polk County Housing and Neighborhood Development offices at (863) 534-5240. (See “Other Links” on the left sidebar for more contact information.)
PUBLIC SERVICE AND COMMUNITY SERVICE GRANTS: There are two grant cycles annually for non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations providing services to City residents. The CDBG grant application is available in November of each year and the General Fund grant application is available in March. (See “Grant Applications” on the left sidebar for application information.)
HOUSING REHABILITATION: Those interested in owner-occupied housing rehabilitation should contact the Housing Section at (863) 834-3360. The rehabilitation program works from an applicant list. On occasion, due to the great demand for assistance, the applicant list may be closed. (See "Housing Assistance Income Limits" on the left sidebar.)
HOME PURCHASE ASSISTANCE: Down payment and closing cost assistance is available to qualified low to moderate income households. The City’s home purchase assistance is provided through a non-profit loan processor, Keystone Challenge Fund, Inc. Persons interested in home purchase assistance should contact Keystone at (863) 682-1025 to obtain information about qualifications and required homeownership classes. Assistance is provided on a first ready, first served basis depending upon funding availability. Listed below are the maximum sales prices. (See "Housing Assistance Income Limits" and “Other Links” on the left sidebar for more information.) |
