Housing Section Facts

The Housing Section administers the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME), the State Housing Initiatives Partnership Program (SHIP), and the City’s community service grants. In 2005 the City received state HOME Again and Hurricane Housing Recovery funds to replace and repair housing damaged during the 2004 hurricanes.

Historically, funding has provided low to moderate income residents with housing rehabilitation, home purchase assistance, public facilities, code enforcement, sidewalk and street paving, and countless public service grants. Assistance is available only within the corporate limits of the City of Lakeland. Residents in the county, but outside the Lakeland city limits, should contact the Polk County Housing and Neighborhood Development Division at (863) 534-5240. (See “Other Links” at left.)

PUBLIC SERVICE AND COMMUNITY SERVICE GRANTS
There are two annual grant cycles for non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations providing services to City residents. The CDBG grant application is available in November and the General Fund grant application is available in March. (See “Grant Applications” at left for application information.)

HOUSING REHABILITATION
Those interested in owner-occupied housing rehabilitation should contact the Housing Section at (863) 834-3360. The program works from an applicant list. On occasion, due to the great demand for assistance, the applicant list may be closed. (See "Housing Assistance Income Limits" at left.)

HOME PURCHASE ASSISTANCE
Down payment and closing cost assistance is available to qualified low to moderate income households. The City’s home purchase assistance is provided through a non-profit loan processor, Keystone Challenge Fund, Inc. Contact Keystone at (863) 682-1025 for information about qualifications and required homeownership classes. Assistance is provided on a first ready - first served basis, depending upon funding availability. Listed below are the maximum sales prices. (See "Housing Assistance Income Limits" and “Other Links” at left for more information.)
